The WindRose Elementary School
Located in Hilo, Hawaii, the Wind Rose Elementary School is designed to respond to a warm, humid, and rainy climate by integrating rainwater reuse, natural ventilation, and active humidity control. Instead of demolishing the existing church to the west of the site, the idea of reimagining it as a community anchor emerged. The school is split into two wings: an Education Wing for student study and a Community Wing that supports after-school learning and public programs. While Classrooms, administration, lunch areas, sensory gardens, and play courtyards create a supportive environment for students; the library, gym, flexible classrooms, and community courtyard are intended for after-school activities. The project creates a learning environment that benefits students and the local Hilo community by using climate-responsive design.
